Womens College Essay - Think About Your Sisterhood

Women's College Essay - Think About Your SisterhoodThe sisterhood of female students, a term coined by columnist Joan Walsh in the Guardian, is one of the most powerful ways to develop your own power as a female student. What's more, it's one that most women don't even realize they're having. In my opinion, the sisterhood is probably the single most significant way to help shape the trajectory of your career path. It's important to understand the principles behind the term, though, because some of the beliefs behind the sisterhood are problematic.First, you need to take a look at the difference between 'women'woman.' Often, people use this term interchangeably. They think it means just that: 'women' who are interested in running things. When you try to learn about the sisterhood, you'll see that this isn't entirely true. For instance, I was in a class where the female teacher told her students to read a piece of work written by an otherwise male student, except the piece of work was p ositive and useful for women's opinions. As I watched the student read the essay, I realized that she was using the term 'women' in a broader sense than the student herself. Her observations were positive, but her thinking didn't equate to her own. I found it difficult to take the paper seriously. My main issue was that she, like so many others in the sisterhood, believes that women are weak. It's an extension of the stereotype that men can get whatever they want when they want it.Think about it. Most men who have the power to get women what they want have been conditioned over time to believe that it's easy to get women and it's wrong to let them dictate their own actions. That's why I think it's so important to start thinking about yourself, both as a woman and as a person, in terms of power.Power doesn't come easy. You have to learn how to wield it and use it intelligently, otherwise it can backfire on you.Sisterhood starts with yourself. Once you take the first step, you'll see t hat the other sisters will follow.
