Gothic Subculture †Sinister or Harmless? Essay

â€Å"What are the worst dangers that threaten our children today? Satanism? Drugs? Homosexuality? A culture of violence? Heat exhaustion? What if there was a danger that included all of these? That danger is here, and its name is GOTH. † 1 Those words, taken from the website hosted by Parents American Religious Organizations Defending Youth which main purpose is to inform and warn parents against dangers related to Gothic subculture, best summarize the confusion around the phenomenon of being ‘Goth’. Is gothdom a sinister cult posing danger to the society or a harmless movement, one among many? The commonly negative reputation of the Gothic subculture, especially among parents and teachers, has its roots in stereotypes. ‘Stereotype’ is defined in the Webster’s New World Dictionary as â€Å"a fixed or conventional notion or conception, as of a person, group, idea, etc. , held by a number of people, and allowing for no individuality, critical judgment, etc. † Stereotypes are usually imposed on the group of people they are applied to by others who are not within the group but are instead critical of them, very often due to lack of understanding or fear. Thus stereotypes are simplified cutouts representing general ideas rather than real living human beings, depriving them of their exceptional individual features. Such attitude easily leads to intolerance, resentment and loss of communication between general society and the subculture, hiding the real truths of alive people behind the stereotypical fiction. Among many stereotypes related to Goths, one of the most common ones is obsession with death. The commonly held view is that they are antisocial outcasts attempting suicide or desiring to kill someone else. In reality, Goths’ fascination with everything related to death is not as superficial as it appears at first sight. Their â€Å"viewpoint on death is one of acceptance of the fate that awaits us all rather than ‘whistling past the graveyard’, denying death and hoping it will just go away. Goths accept death as a natural part of life, part of the natural balance of things. This does not mean, however, that Goths invite death by attempting suicide or homicide – instead they accept and respect death for what it is, and move on. â€Å"2 Although the notion of suicide is fascinating among them, it is not accepted as a solution to their own existential problems, but as an admitted failure to their emotions of despair, loss and loneliness. In this aspect it is the self-awareness and an attempt to overcome the fear of death, an attempt to pursue a critical analysis of their own proximity to death; a different attitude towards this problem, contrary to the one shown in tabloids and TV programmes, where the idea of dying is either ignored or deprived of its dignity. As Birgit Richard points out: â€Å"The Gothics are one of the most conspicuous subcultures because they work against the suppression of ageing with their deathly pale faces in a time when sun-studio tanned complexions are the epitome of health. They become the terror of a deathless producing and consuming culture which marginalizes the process of dying and bodily decay to be able to proclaim the ideal of perpetual youth. Putting death at the centre of their style and their lives becomes a provocation by a subcultural group of adolescents which cannot be forgiven by society. Youth has to look fresh and ‘tasty’; it is not supposed to walk around ‘dead’. In a society with an ever increasing average life expectancy, dealing with death is suitable only when a certain age has been reached. † Another stereotype commonly associated with Goths is that their culture is anti-Christian with its Satanic motifs, black clothing, occult jewellery and devilish music of Marilyn Manson. They are accused of the worship of Satan, dangerous rituals and blood-drinking. Being attracted to the idea of self-mutilation, they are proud of their scars and occult symbols carved with razor blades all over their bodies. The Gothic movement is considered dark and self-destructive, glorifying everything that is morbid, and degrading everything that is good. The truth hiding behind this stereotype is different. Although the rooms of the â€Å"blacks’ are designed in a special manner, e. g. containing small altars with accessories like grave-ribbons, crucifixes, grave lamps, candles and skulls, their purpose is not to serve as a place for black masses but to â€Å"reconstruct the dark atmosphere of the cemetery, its proximity to death, or serve as a cave that shelters from a threatening outside world. â€Å"3 The colour black which dominates the style of clothing does not stand for their attraction to Satan but expresses a sense of despair, ascetic isolation and is the symbolization of inevitable death. The same meaning is vital for hair dyed black, specific make-up with black eye-shadow, lipstick and nail polish, and a chalky white face. Since Goths are attracted to everything related to death, their favourite motifs in jewellery are skulls, skeletons and bones, which serve as memento more rather than provocative items. Other popular accessories, such as crucifixes, stars of David, ankh, the pentagram and the cross turned upside down, do not serve as symbols of Satanism but as distinguishing feature from the institutionalized church or a protective talisman against evil eye. â€Å"Symbolism rejected by as irrational by other parts of society enables them to express dissatisfaction with the institutionalized church and the completely rationalized modern civilization. â€Å"Also their favourite venue, cemetery, has a completely different function than the stereotypical one, considered as a place for morbid Satanic rituals, since it serves as a symbol of mortality, silence, isolation and mourning. To the majority of society Goths are plain deviants and worshippers of Marilyn Manson and other ‘dangerous’ music which inspired the tragic Columbine shootings 5. â€Å"The titles of the songs alone are enough to show just what kind of music this is: Gloomy Sunday, The Order of Death, Draining Faces, Laughing Pain, Haunted, Movement of Fear. These are dangerous songs, performed by dangerous bands. One band for example is called Type O Negative – a blood type, and clearly a reference to Vampirism. â€Å"6 While it may be true that many Goths enjoy Marilyn Manson’s music, almost all of them agree that he is not Goth as â€Å"the controversial shock-rock star with the satanic leanings and violence-tinged music has never been a part of their [Goths’] community, artistically or philosophically. â€Å"7 Besides, Manson probably borrowed from the media portrayal of the Gothic movement which predates his stardom by at least a decade, as its origin is usually placed in 1979. In conclusion, it must be said that evaluating the whole subculture by means of stereotypes may be more sinister than the community’s rules themselves as it shows no respect for the individual, leads to intolerance and finally creates a deep chasm between the general society and the Gothic community. It should not be forgotten that Goths have to cope with the same pressures that non-Goths encounter: social anxieties, family problems, every day failures and stresses. The only thing that differs is their way of dealing with those problems; a darker one and more introspective version of ‘normal’. Tolerance and understanding is what Goths long for, as is stated by one representative of the subculture: â€Å"One way or another, those of us in the Gothic community demand to exist with as many rights and as much respect as is given to any ‘normal’ human being. Our population are millions worldwide, and we laugh, cry, and live just like anyone else. We are your doctors, your counselors, your grocers, your teachers, your students, your librarians, your favourite authors, your fathers, your daughters, and your friends. We may choose to revel in the shadows, but we smile with those who would rather live in the light of day. Being Goth is not a ‘phase’, it is not dangerous, and it is not going anywhere. List the key developments and events in a short 1-page point-form account providing the relevant names of events and dates/ years in which they took place 1) The 1972 United Nations Conference on Human Environment – Stockholm It led directly to the establishment of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), which became the first UN agency to have its headquarters located outside of Europe and North America – in Nairobi in Kenya, East Africa. Among the first tasks given to the UNEP was to establish term ‘environmental education’. The implication for the curriculum in this regard is the pursuance of traditional subjects with emphasis on the grammar school subjects. Such a curriculum is highly conservative in that there is little room for discussion on the kind of content taught. In addition, the public should not critically analyze such a curriculum. Margaret Thatcher was a known proponent and so were some new right conservatives in parliament. Neo liberal proponents believe that the purpose of education is to provide individuals with a means of satisfying their needs just the same way that other commodities in the market do. In this regard, education can be treated as a good in the market place; the more value it possesses, the higher the demand. Proponents of this view strongly adhere to the belief that education has a price and that the market will determine this price. Another type of storage that the ICT department uses is The floppy disks, which are a common external backing storage. They are very useful for transferring data between computers and for keeping a back up of work files. They help the ICT department, as they are very protective, as they can read/write heads access the disk through holes in the protective sleeves, furthermore they are disk read-only which helps to reduce the chances of data being accidentally overwritten and lost. They are small and portable, where data can be transferred between different computers. For the ICT department, they need a drive, which can read data from a disk. The ICT department uses floppy disks and CD-ROMS as thy have a longer access times than hard disks. Additionally, Compact disks are also used, as they hold large quantities of data in the form of text, sound, still pictures or even video clips. It is a memory storage device but which would not be considered as a backing-store as the user cannot write to the disk. A network is a two or more computer connected together. Computers in a network can communicate with each other. The computer needs a network interface card to connect to a network. The ICT department are a part of the LAN network (local area network), which is a network that you see in most offices and schools. LANs are small, local networks. They usually need the following hardware in order to operate; . A network file server, which is a dedicated computer, that runs the software needed by the network and stores the files that users have created. . Terminals are individual workstations that give access to the network. Using a terminal gives access to the networks software and files. . Print server, this is when a group of terminals share use of a printer then the system needs a print server. For the network to operate, data needs to be sent to and from all parts of the network. The Scarlet Letter Book Report 1. What is the book about? This book is about a woman named Hester Prynne, who committed adultery with a successful clergyman named Reverend Arthur Dimmesdale. Hester Prynne was already married to an older doctor, who later called himself Roger Chillingworth. Hester and Reverend Dimmesdales daughter was the little Pearl. Hester Prynne was punished to stand on the scaffold with the scarlet letter AÂ on her bosom and tell everyone who the father of the baby was. Hester refused to say the name of the father and was mocked by everyone and was humiliated in public. Everyone viewed her as a terrible woman who had done unaccepted things and was supposed to be killed. Hester was not put to death however, but was imprisoned in a bad state. The baby girl was crying and the jailor called a doctor to come and examine them. The doctor that the jailor brought was Roger Chillingworth. He calmed the baby and her mother with pills and had a talk with Hester, his wife. Chillingworth told Hester that if she kept the secret t hat he is her husband, then he will not harm her or the baby. Hester agreed, but refused to tell him who the father of the baby was. Chillingworth was very upset and told her that he will find out who the father was and torture and punish him. After a while, Hester and her baby were set free, but Hester decided to stay in New England and wore the scarlet letter Aevery day and was isolated by the people there. Hester acted very nicely toward other people after she was let go. After seven years, Hester and Pearl, who had grown to be an intelligent young girl, met Mr. Dimmesdale and Chillingworth. At that time, Mr. Dimmesdales health was very terrible and Chillingworth was his doctor. Hester found out that Mr. Dimmesdale was tortured by the guilt in his heart for the past seven years, while Hester lived a fairly good life with her daughter. Chillingworth and Dimmesdale were living together and were thought to be friends. Instead, Chillingworth was revenging against Dimmesdale everyday without noticed by Dimmesdale that he was the husband of Hester. One day when Dimmesdale and Hester met in a forest alone with the little Pearl, they talked about leaving everything behind and going to Europe, where no one knows them, and start a new life and Hester told him that Chillingworth is her husband, who lived with him every day and trying to take a revenge against him. On the Election Day, Dimmesdale gave a great sermon. After that, he went to the scaffold along with Hester and Pearl. He told the public that he was the father and died on there. 2. What was interesting about the plot and the characters? Hester Prynne committed adultery with the pastor, Dimmesdale, and when she was asked by Mr. Dimmesdale, who the father of the child was, she remained silent. Pearl, the child of Hester Prynne, always saw her mother with the scarlet letter Aon her bosom, and did not want to get closer to her mother when Hester without the scarlet letter called her in the forest. Reverend Arthur Dimmesdale was a preacher and was thought by everyone that he was holy and honored by everyone, but actually, he was the one who committed adultery, which was not tolerated by the people and was supposed to be killed. Roger Chillingworth, Hesters husband, came to the prison and gave Hester a pill for the child and herself to calm them down and make them feel better, but she refused to take them at first and doubting that her husband was going to take revenge. Mr. Dimmesdale lived with Roger Chillingworth for so long and never knew that Chillingworth was taking revenge on him and torturing him everyday and thoug ht that Chillingworth was his friend. Hester and Chillingworth talked in the woods that they were going to leave New England and move to Europe, where no one knows them, but on the Election day, Chillingworth confessed his sin and died on the scaffold. 3. What insights might you get from the book? There is no secret that can be kept forever, especially when the secret is something that you did wrong and felt guilty about. You will be tortured everyday by the feeling of guilt and it would make you feel much better after you confess what you have done wrong. It was wrong to lie in order to reach success in your life. Revenge is very powerful; it can change a person completely. Revenge does you nothing but make other people and your lives miserable, but love can make everyone happy. A mistake you make in your life is not going to ruin your life unless you cant walk out of the shadow of your mistake. If you change the way you act, other people will feel it and have different opinions about you. Guilty feelings will eventually make you sick and have bad health. You cannot stay healthy with guilt in your heart. 4. Did you like the authors style of writing? No, I dont like the authors style of writing, because its too old English and I cannot really understand it fully. I have a hard time understanding the way sentences were written and it takes me a long time to get through a page. The dialogues were not present day speech, which makes it hard for me to get what they mean. We dont normally speak like that. They order of the words are sometimes rearranged, and I need to read it in the way that I may understand them. The author used too many words that I dont know. I dont like to read what I have a hard time understanding every sentence. I want to enjoy reading the book instead of trying to figure out what every sentence mean. I dont like the writing style of the author who uses English that I have trouble understand. I dont like how the scarlet letter was written. 5. Did you like the book? Why or why not? No, I dont like the book, because it takes me too long to finish the book and I dont actually understand what the story is about. The dialogues were so hard to understand and I am not familiar with the uses of the words in the book. The author uses too many words to describe a simple thing, person, or setting. The story is too wordy with too many unnecessary words. I have trouble understand more than ninety percent of the story. I dont get what the author trying to express most of the time. The words are very difficult for me to understand. The way of speaking is completely different from what I have learned. Even the words that the child spoke were so hard to understand. I felt like I am not educated enough to read and understand this thought provoking book. The more I read; the more confusion I get. I thought I am reading an English book, but I am like reading a foreign language book. I dont like this book.

He early accepted a captains commission in a company of voulnteers,raised for the defense of the province, and manfully opposed. A committee appointed, of which Clymer was chairman, to wait upon the cosignees, to request the not to sell. In 1775, Clymer was chosen as a member of the council of safety,and one of the first treasurers. The next year he was elected a member of the continental congress. Affirmative action has been a controversial topic ever since it was established in the 1960s to right past wrongs against minority groups, such as African Americans, Hispanics, and women. The goal of affirmative action is to integrate minorities into public institutions, like universities, who have historically been discriminated against in such environments. Proponents claim that it is necessary in order to give minorities representation in these institutions, while opponents say that it is reverse discrimination. Newsweek has a story on this same debate which has hit the nation spotlight once more with a case being brought against the University of Michigan by some white students who claimed that the University’s admissions policies accepted minority students over them, even though they had better grades than the minority students. William Symonds of Business Week, however, thinks that it does not really matter. He claims that minority status is more or less irrelevant in co llege admissions and that class is the determining factor. According to the Encyclopà ¦dia Britannica, affirmative action is â€Å"an active effort to improve employment or educational opportunities for members of minority groups and women.† However, despite its well-intentioned policies, it has been the source of much controversy over the years. Cathedral Essay -- essays research papers

The protagonist in â€Å"Cathedral,† Bub, is a man who has several defining characteristics. Bub is insecure, insensitive, and ignorant. This is clearly shown in Bub’s relationships with his wife and Robert. Bub’s insecurities are blatantly shown when he comments on his wife’s ex-husband: Her officer-why should be have a name? He was her childhood sweetheart, and what more does he want? Bub resents the ex-husband for being his wife’s first love. He would have liked to have had that role so he negatively addresses his wife’s past relationships. Bub’s unconfident mannerisms further transpire when he comments on his wife’s relationship with Robert. He states: In time she put it all on tape and sent the tape to the blind man. Over the years she put all kinds of stuff on tapes and sent the tapes off lickety-split. Next to writing a poem every year, I think it was her chief recreation. On the tape, she told the blind man she’d decided to live away from her officer for a time. On another tape she told him about her divorce. She and I began going out, and of course she told her blind man about it. She told him everything, or so it seemed to me. This intense friendship between his wife and Robert further exacerbated his insecurities. Robert and his wife have an intimate relationship that Bub has never, and probably will never, have with his wife. He goes on to say: My wife finally took her eyes off the blind man and looked at me. I had the feelings she didn’t like what she saw. I shrugged. This relationship offers Bub only one consolation, he believes that because he can see that has an advantage. He constantly refers to Robert as â€Å"the blind man.† He never uses Robert’s name or assigns any human attributes to him. This insecurity is partially responsible for his wife’s continued involvement with Robert.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Also responsible for his wife’s close relationship with Robert is Bub’s inability to feel. He exhibits a great lack of emotional depth. Bub comments on Robert’s marriage: They’d married, lived and worked together, slept together-had sex, sure- and then the blind man had to bury her. All this without having never seen what the goddamned woman looked like. He has no feelings of sympathy for the loss of Robert’s wife. Bub goes on to comment about his wife telling him exactly happened to Robert’s wife. He says, â€Å"My wife filled me in w... ...s his freedom from his sheltered and close-minded life.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The overall themes of the story were alienation and loneliness. The main characters experience, and have experienced alienation and loneliness. Bub is discontented in his work, envious of his wife, and isolated from other human beings and also from himself. Because of this, Bub resents his wife’s connections with other people. Keening this in mind, Bub makes no effort to correct this problem. When Robert arrives he makes to attempt to engage him in conversation. He prefers to remain cut off and observe. As the conversation breaks, Bub turns on the television, which is not only extremely impolite, but one that offers proof of Bub’s detachment with his wife and her friend.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The story demonstrates an interesting sort of irony. The disability that Bub condemned and presupposed was in fact a handicap that he had himself. He was emotionally blind. Robert assisted Bub in overcoming those traits that were keeping him from experiencing the most wonderful things in life. This freed Bub from his insecurities, ignorance, and insensitivities. He was then capable of truly seeing.

Maintaining a Commitment to Professionalism Functional Area 13: Professionalism: Candidate makes decisions based on the knowledge of early childhood theories and practices; promotes quality in child care services; and takes advantage of opportunities to improve competence, both for personal and professional growth and for the benefit of children and families. I enjoy working with young children at my center, and I love teaching them new things and watching them get excited when they do something right or learn. I keep a positive attitude, because it is what is best for them to be around. I also try to help promote a positive atmosphere throughout the center. I strive to learn more about the development of children in my age group by reading articles and taking classes that will further my understanding. I keep informed about any new regulations that may have been put out. When I feel that a child needs any outside resources, such as speech therapy, I find that information for the parents and set up conferences to discuss options. I try to take care of myself so I have the energy to be effective in my classroom. I try to cooperate with other staff members in the center to make my classroom, as well as other rooms, the best it can be. I try to take criticism and learn from it, such as evaluations from supervisors and self evaluations of goals I have set for my classroom. I try to honor the philosophy of our program on a daily basis to the best of my ability.

If You Can Have Dinner with Any People

There has been a time when I have always wondered what it would be like to have dinner with people who inspire me. I have thought long and hard about 3 people who give me motivation to be all I can be. Growing up as a Latin woman in NYC has made me want to be a successful woman. I want to see the world and help others in need. I have chosen to have dinner with Rata Moreno a Latin woman from Human, Puerco Rice. My Grandparent's are from Human, a small town about 45 miss from the capital.Human is full of land , nature, tall mountains and amazing culture. I also would love for Audrey Hepburn to Join us followed by Anita Rowdier. These three women are very influential in many ways and I can relate to them. The dinner I have chosen for us will be full of colorful foods. Salads, pastas, cheese, seafood and wine. Rata Moreno loves to dance and I am sure she will be the life of the party. I come from a big Puerco Rican family like Rata also from Human and we love to dance, cook and enjoy qua lity time.We can turn anything small into a festivity. Moreno has a similar background; she grew up very poor and was forced to move to the slums of NYC only to find herself a bit lost. Rite's mom made a living so that Rata can focus on school and her career. Like most Puerco Rican families from the ass's and ass's they work extremely hard to have a better life. Rata went on got an education and pursue her career. She found herself in Show business acting and playing roles as a minority. She landed her famous role as Anita from West side story.The first and only Latin woman in History and one of the few performers to have won an Emmy, a Grammar, an Oscar, and a Tony, and was the second Puerco Rican to win an Academy Award. Rata is also involved in the Jack Robinson Foundation to give children a better schooling system. Audrey Hepburn is a classic woman of Hollywood who is also an immigrant from Belgium growing up it was not always easy but she came from a middle class family. Audrey grew up most of her life in boarding schools and nannies this was during the world war 2.

The 9/11 commission report was released to give all the information on what occurred on the attacks of September 11. In the commission report it gives information on why the towers were attacked and who was the main suspect. Osama bin laden and Al Qaeda are the ones blamed for the attacks. Since then America isn’t the same anymore. Now we have 24 hour protection from any terrorist risks. Since 9/11, no one has ever been the same. The airports are now really strict on anything that gets on the plane. We have spent a lot of money in our economy on the war on terror. Terrorism has brought a lot of racism and discrimination to Arab people in America. Since people from the Middle East have been pointed out as the main terrorist everyone here thinks that anyone wearing a turban is a terrorist. The way it has affected me is now I see the world different. Now anywhere in the world there can be an attacked on anyone from any ethnic group or religious background. I know that terrorist is a real thing happening in the world and no one can argue that we do not need any protection. The 9/11 commission and the news keep us updated on any terrorist activity. The good thing about having information and security from terrorist is that it keeps us safe and prevents tragedies like the one that happened on September 11th. The bad thing is that I’ve been hearing in the news that a lot of people are not comfortable with the pat down in airports because people feel violated. The screening that they do makes the public feel uncomfortable because their private areas are shown. I necessarily don’t care if they see me naked because I have nothing to hide and I want to get on a plane safe and I hope everyone else has a safe flight. The first half of the book shows the origins of the civil rights movement parallel to that of the life of Martin Luther King Jr. Some of the significant points raised by branch were as follows: The â€Å"birth† of the black preacher, John Rockefellers endowment, Kings early education and the immediate cause of the civil rights movement. Following their emancipation from slavery, the African-American peoples journey to freedom has actually begun. Despite the complete abolition of slavery, segregation took its place as most whites, especially from the South, found it hard to accept former slaves as equals and still sought to marginalize the black people. It was only in the church that blacks found leaders who were of strong character and would be the launch pad on their crusade for equality. As W. E. B. DuBois put it, the preacher is â€Å"the most unique personality developed by the Negro† (quoted in Branch 3). Next would be a footnote in the history of origins of the civil rights movement with the involvement of tycoon and philanthropist John D. Rockefeller whose involvement in the advancement of the African-Americans was attributed to his wife, Laura Spelman whose family were known abolitionists of the antebellum and civil war era. Because of this, Rockefeller provided an endowment for the creation of a school for blacks which would be named after his wifes family (Spelman College) in Atlanta, once the heart of the Confederacy. The significance of these two circumstances would be that Martin Luther Kings maternal grandfather, and his father were preachers and his maternal grandmother Jennie Parks and his mother Alberta were students of Spelman College, therefore, a beneficiary of Rockefellers philanthropy (Branch 30). The education of his parents enabled the younger King to live a relatively comfortable life compared to other blacks who were not as fortunate as his family and lived in virtually a hand-to-mouth existence because segregation denied them the opportunities to better their lives. Kings education took him to Pennsylvania where he was exposed to liberal education that made him feel like an equal. He began his first public ministry at the age of 25, at the time the Supreme Court, the the Brown vs. Board ruling outlawed segregation in schools. But this was only the tip of the proverbial iceberg. The catalyst of the civil rights movement began when Rosa Parks, a seamstress from Montgomery, Alabama, was arrested for refusing to give up her seat at the bus. This incident had prodded King to take the lead in the civil rights movement and thereby set the course he took which would irrevocably change his life (Branch 150). In the second half of the book. It covers the crusade Martin Luther King had now taken up and led following his political baptism of fire, from the twilight of the Eisenhower years , the advancement of John F, Kennedy and eventually the dawning of the New South. Taking a leaf from Gandhis passive resistance approach, King endured sufferings and humiliations yet he took it in stride in the same manner as Christ and persevered. Under such conditions the U. S. Congress passed the Civil Rights Act, which ensures that all people born in the United States are accorded equal protection law and that race could not be used as a condition to deprive them of their civil rights (Branch 303). All in all, Parting the Waters proved to be an excellent start in the 3-volume history of the civil rights movement by Branch who would follow it up with â€Å"Pillar of Fire† and â€Å"At Canaans Edge. † One would notice that the titles allude to the history of the Hebrews as told in the book of Exodus in the Bible. Branch was somehow able to draw a parallelism of the odyssey of the Hebrews to that of the African-Americans on their quest for real freedom and equality. Works Cited Branch, Taylor.
